5 out of 5 stars A reliable external hard drive   September 5, 2010
    R. Edelman
I have purchased four of these drives so far. Two 320 GB drives were purchased more than two years ago and are still working well. The other two are more recent purchases. I recently purchased a Toshiba Canvio drive after I was lured into buying it due to its low "Deal of the Day" price. The Toshiba drive was defective right out of the box and never worked. I returned the Toshiba Canvio to Amazon and replaced it with a Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB drive, which worked perfectly from the start. The Seagate FreeAgent Go was also recognized by my son's MacBook Pro without any problem. I have been satisfied with Seagate drives and will continue to return to that brand as a customer.

    Totally useless product.

Backed up perfectly the first time used, was unable to access drive after that.

3 out of 5 stars just received   September 4, 2010

So I just go this drive today and backed up 90 gigs of pictures and videos. The drive connects immediately and is silent. I got the red and I'd say it's more of a wine color. My only complaint is that the drive is labeled as a 640 GB drive, but on the computer it only reads as 590 GB. Now I'm not complaining about the size, it's more than sufficient for my needs, but I just want to know how you can loose 50 GB worth of space? I could understand 1, 2, or even 5 GB, but not 50 GB, at that point it just becomes false advertising. I'll update this later if anything should happen to the drive in an unreasonable amount of time, basically before three years, which is my standard for drives right now.

2 out of 5 stars Died after 6 months. Seagate support is non-existent   September 2, 2010

I loved this product until a few days ago. The drive died and when I contacted Seagate I figured out why they can sell them so cheaply. They make up their money in support. I first tried to reach them through their "preferred" method, live chat with technical support on their site. After waiting 30 minutes for a response (during business hours) I disconnected and called them.

I explained to the woman on the phone what had happened and she asked if I'd like to try to see if someone in technical support could help retrieve my data. I said yes. She then explained that the cost would be $15 to SPEAK to technical support. I told her no thank you. Just replace my drive. She then gives me the option of returning the drive using my own packing materials, paying for shipping and waiting 2-4 weeks for a replacement drive, or spending $19.95 to have them ship me a new drive first and use their materials to return it.

I'm seeing my story repeated on reviews all over the net and I don't want another Seagate drive. Can someone tell me who makes a RELIABLE portable drive?
